Leadership Artifact #5:
Synthesis Paper
Course: Foundations of Leadership
Date: Fall 2013 Instructor: Dr. Diana Petrarca
About the artifact:
This artifact is a synthesis paper I wrote just four weeks into my Foundations of Leadership course. In it, I reflect on my learning in those four weeks on the concept of leadership.

Reflection.
I have chosen to include this artifact in my portfolio because I think it demonstrates how much learning happens in this program. After just four short weeks I wrote this paper to synthesize my learning on the topic of Leadership. This artifact demonstrates my grasp of the concepts from early leadership theories. As I mentioned in an earlier reflection, sifting through and keeping all these theories was a great challenge for me. I think this artifact shows that I clearly understood the topics and was able to connect it to the big questions in this course about what leadership means. What I really like about this paper in particular is that I included a definition I wrote the very first night of the class. It is interesting to see the ways in which that definition evolved, but also stayed the same. I think that speaks to my previous learning in the program. Without the previous learning I don’t think I would have been able to really answer the question. While I did not formally learn about leadership, I could carefully consider other learning in related areas.
I also think this artifact demonstrates growth. It demonstrates where I began, where I was and, in looking at the other artifacts in this section, where I went. At this point I was still searching for an accurate theory of leadership. Later, I found it. This reflection is very short because I think the artifact itself actually articulates my learning on the topic. It would be redundant to discuss it at length here.
